About Me
Perry Rourk for Mount Pleasant
Perry Rourk is a lifelong resident of Mount Pleasant and a graduate of the College of Charleston. He and his wife, an Air Force Reserve veteran, live in Rivertowne with their two sons. A former volunteer youth sports coach, Perry now serves on multiple state and local sports-related boards and commissions.
Committed to enhancing community life, Perry is focused on ensuring residents receive quality Town services while maintaining fiscal responsibility, improving traffic flow, investing in public parks and recreation, and increasing citizen engagement in local government. He spearheaded the creation of Mount Pleasant’s citizen-led Recreation Advisory Commission, served as its chair for two years, and successfully advocated for extended public comment time at Town Council and committee meetings.
Issues
The Town’s first priority must be to ensure residents receive high-quality services in a fiscally responsible manner. Police, Fire, Sanitation, Planning, Transportation, and Recreation should always remain Council’s primary focus. The quality of service residents receive depends on the quality of the people the Town employs. To attract and retain top talent, Mount Pleasant must stay competitive with surrounding municipalities by continually evaluating and adjusting pay, benefits, equipment, and workplace culture.
Providing Quality Services
Parks And Recreation
Preserving green space protects our environment, supports wildlife, and keeps Mount Pleasant beautiful. Parks, trails, and recreational facilities are essential for families, community events, and overall quality of life, providing safe, active spaces for residents of all ages.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure and zoning must work hand-in-hand to maintain quality of life and prevent costly mistakes. Reducing traffic congestion means optimizing signal timing, implementing smart traffic light technology, and making targeted intersection upgrades to keep vehicles moving. I will fight for the swift completion of key projects in the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan—especially Billy Swails Parkway—to deliver congestion relief for our residents. Mount Pleasant must have greater input in the Highway 41 widening project. The current ‘road to compromise’ plan has significant flaws, including environmental impacts, increased project costs, and added maintenance cost burdens for the Town.
Citizen Engagement
The only way to truly serve the people you represent is by ensuring they have the opportunity to be heard and by providing transparency. I support citizen engagement as a key tool for identifying solutions. A true representative must remain open-minded and willing to listen to all sides of an issue. I fully support Mount Pleasant’s ‘strong council’ form of government, as I believe it provides the most effective representation for our residents.
